makeover, part II

Do you remember this table from this post?

I didn't like it.  Sounds like most folks didn't.  Live & learn, right?

So I made amends with this table & started anew on the top.  I'm so glad I did.

I'm sooooo glad I did… aren't you??  Just goes to show you that paint isn't permanent.  You can always go back & change something that you aren't happy with!

thanks for coming by!

classic gray

We're back from our trip… Sad to leave St Thomas but SO happy to get home to our boys!  I'll share a couple more pictures from the trip:

This is my idea of perfection ~ an ice-cold diet coke with some yummy ice.  Bliss

I never knew I was afraid of iguanas.  Until this past weekend.  These things are EVERYWHERE.  Thankfully not too many at the Ritz, but they seem to pop up when you least expect them.  And they are 2.5-3 feet long, easy.  I shudder at the thought!

Our pool, overlooking the beach.

View of town from the hotel where my husband had his meeting (Frenchmen's Reef).

Our wonderful room.  It was so lovely!

Now, back to what this blog is really all about… furniture!!

These two pieces were destined to be together.  They weren't made together, or even purchased together.  But they just 'go' together.

Here are their before's, when they first met in my garage…

The dresser was a find from the North Fulton Community Charities location.  The hutch was 'free to me' from a friend who mentioned she had it & didn't want it.  It's all "curvy" she said… which, to her, was why she didn't like it.  To me, it was perfection!!

I painted them in an 'oops' gray, which isn't something I do often.  So, no color name for you, sorry.  I primed first, then painted & heavily distressed so that in some places the white shows through, and in others, the dark shows through.

I wiped the hardware down with some oil rubbed bronze but kept all of it.  I love it.

Here you go:

I hope you love it as much as I do!!

homemade banner

So I haven't been painting this week, but did want to show you this banner that I finished a while back.  I am so happy with it!

I am serving on the Tartan Trot team at church right now ~ The Tartan Trot is a race that takes place in January (in conjunction with our Scottish Heritage celebration, thus the name) that raises funds to send our youth on mission trips, as well as support a variety of local/global outreach that our church is passionate about.  There is a 10K, 5K and a fun run for the kiddos.  For those of you who are local, it is also a Peachtree qualifier (big news here in Atlanta).

If you're interested, the link is here.

We wanted to make a 'splash' in the lobby for our fundraising kick-off.  I used my new silhouette (I donated the cricut to the church children's ministries!!  they love it!) to cut the letters from tartan fabrics & adhered them to the fleece using heat n bond.  I made the trim around the sides with strips of bandanas.

Excuse our messy table, we were just getting set up!

I also made the tablecloth while I was at it, using the same method except the trim on the tablecloth is actually ribbon.

thanks for stopping by!  I promise I'll stop vacationing soon and get back to painting.  In the meantime I've got lots to show you, and will be posting some fun pieces of furniture next week.

Guest Post ~ Using Painted Pieces in the Dining Room

Hi everyone!

Fall is really, really here now.  I just looked at my weather channel app & its 38 degrees in Atlanta.  Burr!

I'm on the trip of a lifetime ~ tagging along with my husband on a business trip to… St. Thomas!  I really cannot imagine how anyone can 'work' here.  The stunning views everywhere you look are pretty distracting!

We were supposed to be staying at the Frenchmen's Reef, but when we got there to check-in, they let us know they were overbooked & we were being bumped to… the Ritz Carlton!  (It just keeps getting better & better!).   The last two pictures above were taken from our balcony :)   We're enjoying every second!

Now, onto the big guest post!!   Many many thanks to Anna from Arcadian Lighting for her work on this!

Hi, I'm Susi, a writer for the Arcadian Lighting blog, a fabulous resource for gorgeous lighting fixtures for your home. I'm excited to be visiting A Few Good Pieces today because I love the look of painted furniture. My post today is all about painted pieces in the dining room. The dining room is the perfect room to add painted furniture for character and interest. I've pulled eight pics that feature painted pieces in the dining room°™hope they inspire you and your readers! Enjoy!

Lamps on Painted Cabinet

A painted piece of furniture can become a focal point in a dining room. This green cabinet draws the eye to it as it is the only colored piece of furniture in this chic dining room. The table lamps also add a nice touch of symmetry to the room.

Painted Table

This white painted table wouldn't stand out like it does if it were natural wood. The white looks fresh against the wood chairs and sisal rug.

Painted Furniture

A white painted dining table is the focal point for this lovely pastel dining room. Pink and blue dining chairs stand out against the simple white dining table.

Painted Furnitures

Painting both the dining chairs and the nooks the same color creates a cohesive look in this charming farmhouse dining room. Love the blue color of the Windsor style chairs.

Light Fixture

This beautiful dining room is anchored by a dark antique dining table. The white painted chairs keep the room feeling light and airy and tie in to the rest of the room's palette. A perfect pairing with the feminine contemporary light fixture over the table.

Painted Corner Cabinets

Painted corner cabinets add color to the corners of this pretty dining room. The paint technique gives them an antique feeling, which is perfect for the style of this design.

Gray Painted Hutch

Not all painted furniture in the dining room needs to pop or be the focal point. This drab gray hutch is perfect for drawing attention to the lovely pottery that fills its shelves.

Chandelier

Painted furniture in the dining room is a great opportunity to add some fun to the room. In this open living space filled with eclectic furnishings and chandeliers, these citrusy green chairs definitely draw attention to the dining table.

fall break

Any guesses where we are??

I painted my front door before we left, from chipped & worn white to glossy black.  My halloween wreath goes perfectly with it :)

We went to a local pumpkin patch for our pumpkins this year & instead of carving them, we had a pumpkin painting party.  Much easier, tons safer & just as fun for the kids.

Happy fall, y'all!
