old white + duncan phyfe

Somehow, in the midst of all the May chaos, I didn't get a before shot of this piece.  It was dark wood and the veneer had chipped off in about a bazillion pieces.  There was no saving the wood for staining.

I chose to paint it in Annie Sloan's Old White Chalk Paint.  I have sung the praises of chalk paint… and I still love it.  BUT, it took 4 coats of Old White to cover this piece!  There was a lot of bleed through.  I have since used several other colors that were new to me, and didn't have this problem with any of them.  It will take me a while to get up the nerve to use Old White again!

I'm not sure if you can tell in these pictures, but this is after the third coat & it still needs another coat.

I'm thrilled with how it came out, though.  So I'm not going to complain about the Old White too much.

I was able to keep the original hardware.  It is gorgeous ~ I didn't touch it at all.

In other exciting news, I've spent some time organizing all of my hardware.  I'm not done yet, but the bucket system seems to be working for me.  Now to find somewhere to store all of the buckets…

Hope you're having a great week!  I've got lots to share… I've been painting & not posting, so I need to catch up.

thanks for coming by!

  8. It does look great! I'm getting ready to use some Old White on a piece I have. Hope it works for me! It's not as dark as yours was, so hopefully it won't take 4 coats!

  9. I'm not sure how I came across your blog (blog from a blog from a blog) but I'm SOOOO excited to read that you are having that issue with Old White, as well. It took only one coat of Louis Blue chalk paint to cover a very dark piece. I'm now on coat #3 with Old White on a new piece! Ugh...I still love it, but you're right.... I'll be mixing Old White with another color if I use it again! : )

  10. White is sometimes the hardest color to get to look really solid. I love how this turned out.

  12. I love your dresser. It looks fabulous. I was thinking that chalk paint is flat and like primer. Your dresser looks like it has some shininess to it. Did you wax it?
Isn't the chalk paint very expensive?
    great job!

  18. It turned out beautiful. I think if you'd primered it with Kilz latex primer you would have had no bleed through problems. Surely easier than 4 coats of paint. But it's gorgeous nonetheless.
